The “B word” – a wedding dress budget can be tough!

How do you set a budget?  How much is too much to spend on a wedding dress?  Is it worth it?  The short answer is, there is no “one size fits all” answer. Each bride’s budget scenario is unique… however, there are a few key factors that I suggest exploring before you begin your dress shopping adventure!

How much can you REALLY afford?

Take a long look at your wedding planning budget.  If you will be the one paying for your wedding dress, have you budgeted for a dress within your wedding planning budget?  If not, how much of your monthly/annual salary are you willing and able to put toward a dress?  Being realistic with yourself and your personal financial situation is important.  This allows you to work more logically and less emotionally.

Has someone else offered to pay for your dress?

Awesome!  What a special gift!  The same advice applies to this scenario as if you’d be paying for the dress yourself.  Allow your parent, friend or family member to be honest with you about their financial situation and what they can contribute toward a dress.  Make sure you discuss this before you begin shopping/exploring so that you can set realistic spending limits.

Let your bridal crew know about your budget

If you haven’t read my “Tips for a successful wedding dress shopping appointment” diary entry, give it a quick read!  I think that this piece of advice is essential to having a successful bridal appointment.  It’s super helpful to have a quick discussion with anyone that is coming to your appointment with you to make sure you are all on the same page with your budget.

What if you fall in love with a dress that’s outside of your budget?

I am definitely guilty of this when shopping for almost anything!  It is so easy to get carried away when shopping for a special item.  A wedding dress can be a very important part of your wedding day for some, and therefore may take precedence over something else.  My best advice for this is to COMPROMISE.  If a wedding dress is super important to you, then I think it’s ok to splurge!  If floral arrangements are your thing and you’d rather save the extra cash to put towards that, then do it!  It’s all about what is important to you at the end of the day.  And, at Dressed in Love, we have some awesome “financing” options available, should you find yourself shopping outside of your budget!
